UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 357,000, an increase of 34,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 323,000. The 4-week moving average was 325,000, an increase of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 317,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 18 was 2,480,000, an increase of 45,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,435,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,449,500, an increase of 18,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,430,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 322,410 in the week ending Nov. 25, a decrease of 45,203 from the previous week. There were 290,730 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Nov. 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,085,648, a decrease of 183,817 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,302,708.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 11.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,483 in the week ending Nov. 18, an increase of 1,042 from the prior week. There were 1,930 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 241 from the preceding week.

There were 16,854 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 11, an increase of 2,255 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,018, an increase of 1,625 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 11 were in Alaska (4.0 percent), Puerto Rico (3.4), Michigan (3.3), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Arkansas (2.5), Oregon (2.5), California (2.2), Wisconsin (2.2), Connecticut (2.1), Massachusetts (2.1), and South Carolina (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 18 were in California (+9,949), Illinois (+9,309), Pennsylvania (+8,925), New Jersey (+3,816), and Michigan (+3,296), while the largest decreases were in Mississippi (-365), and South Carolina (-16).
