UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

In the week ending Oct. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 327,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 311,250, an increase of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 305,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 21 was 2,415,000, a decrease of 27,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,442,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,432,750, a decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,439,000.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 300,091 in the week ending Oct. 28, an increase of 8,563 from the previous week. There were 294,376 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Oct. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,096,218, a decrease of 20,662 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,378,680.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 14.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,488 in the week ending Oct. 21, an increase of 316 from the prior week. There were 1,928 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 132 from the preceding week.

There were 16,214 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 14, an increase of 1,504 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,250, an increase of 305 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 14 were in Puerto Rico (3.5 percent), Michigan (3.3), Alaska (3.2), New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Arkansas (2.2), Oregon (2.1), California (2.0), Connecticut (2.0), Massachusetts (2.0), and South Carolina (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 21 were in Illinois (+3,753), Ohio (+2,863), Pennsylvania (+2,821), Indiana (+2,068), and New York (+1,962), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-5,020), South Carolina (-1,649), California (-712), Alaska (-213), and Texas (-186).
