UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 310,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 318,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Aug. 26, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 26 was 2,492,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,477,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,488,250, an increase of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,483,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 257,595 in the week ending Sept. 2, an increase of 6,073 from the previous week. There were 271,613 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Aug. 26, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,250,625, a decrease of 18,352 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,323,719.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 19.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,247 in the week ending Aug. 26, an increase of 237 from the prior week. There were 1,944 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 40 from the preceding week.

There were 14,727 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 552 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,733, a decrease of 165 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 19 were in Puerto Rico (3.4 percent), Michigan (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.8), Alaska (2.7), Rhode Island (2.6), Connecticut (2.5), Massachusetts (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), and Oregon (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 26 were in New York (+4,488), Kentucky (+1,847), North Carolina (+1,195), Pennsylvania (+715), and Tennessee (+668), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,845), Virginia (-1,801), Michigan (-1,381), Illinois (-534), and Nebraska (-505).
