UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 304,000, a decrease of 30,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 334,000. The 4-week moving average was 316,750, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 8 was 2,505,000, an increase of 85,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,420,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,443,750, an increase of 20,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,423,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 376,003 in the week ending July 15, a decrease of 42,252 from the previous week. There were 374,665 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending July 8, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,525,395, an increase of 313,706 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,624,504.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,300 in the week ending July 8, an increase of 609 from the prior week. There were 1,982 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 29 from the preceding week.

There were 12,349 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 1, a decrease of 62 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,981, a decrease of 1,382 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 1 were in Puerto Rico (3.0 percent), Alaska (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), Michigan (2.8), New Jersey (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Connecticut (2.4), Massachusetts (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Oregon (2.2), and Wisconsin (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 8 were in Michigan (+31,976), New York (+13,407), Ohio (+12,241), Wisconsin (+9,705), and Pennsylvania (+5,261), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-3,165), New Jersey (-1,572), Connecticut (-1,215), Rhode Island (-1,063), and Louisiana (-555).
