UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 309,000, an increase of 17,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was 311,500, a decrease of 5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 317,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending Dec. 31, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 31 was 2,702,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,690,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,681,750, an increase of 27,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,654,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 556,973 in the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of 80,613 from the previous week. There were 693,776 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Dec. 31, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,166,881, an increase of 345,318 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,401,253.

 

Extended benefits were available in Louisiana during the week ending Dec. 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,679 in the week ending Dec. 31, an increase of 142 from the prior week. There were 1,591 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 181 from the preceding week.

There were 21,335 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 24, an increase of 1,839 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,498, a decrease of 8 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 24 were in Alaska (5.5 percent), Michigan (3.9), Mississippi (3.8), Puerto Rico (3.6), Louisiana (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), Wisconsin (3.3), Oregon (3.1), Idaho (2.9), and New Jersey (2.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 31 were in Wisconsin (+8,682), Pennsylvania (+7,814), North Carolina (+6,726), Georgia (+6,408), and New Jersey (+5,523), while the largest decreases were in California (-10,683), Illinois (-5,008), Texas (-3,786), Kentucky (-2,812), and Ohio (-2,454).
