UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Sept. 24, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 24 was 2,905,000, an increase of 118,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,787,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,732,000, an increase of 83,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,648,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 312,394 in the week ending Oct. 1, an increase of 19,569 from the previous week. There were 279,591 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the
week ending Sept. 24, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,422,567, an increase of 72,842 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,368,048. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 17. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,315 in the week ending Sept. 24, a decrease of 43 from the prior week. There were 2,029 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 128 from the preceding week. There were 15,656 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 17, a decrease of 424 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,273, a decrease of 550 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 17 were in Louisiana (10.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.2), Mississippi (5.1), Alaska (2.8), New Jersey (2.5), Michigan (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Arkansas (2.1), Massachusetts (2.1), California (2.0), Connecticut (2.0), and South Carolina (2.0). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 24 were in Mississippi (+3,705), Michigan (+2,590), Nebraska (+384), West Virginia (+278), and Rhode Island (+80), while the largest decreases were in Louisiana (-34,172), Florida (-3,255), Georgia (-2,797), Alabama (-2,359), and California (-2,127).
