UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 303,000, a decrease of 34,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,000, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 321,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending July 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 9 was 2,577,000, a decrease of 41,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,618,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,591,000, a decrease of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,595,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 369,503 in the week ending July 16, a decrease of 57,481 from the previous week. There were 394,372 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending July 9, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,631,385, an increase of 220,570 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,894,749.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,088 in the week ending July 9, an increase of 147 from the prior week. There were 2,032 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 56 from the preceding week.

There were 13,964 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 2, an increase of 38 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,309, a decrease of 531 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 2 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.9), Michigan (2.7), Oregon (2.7), Arkansas (2.5), Connecticut (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Massachusetts (2.4), and Wisconsin (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 9 were in Michigan (+27,496), New York (+10,968), Indiana (+8,722), Ohio (+7,998), and North Carolina (+5,546), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-3,633), California (-1,733), Massachusetts (-1,036), Connecticut (-476), and Colorado (-287).
