UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 320,750, an increase of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 320,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending July 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 2 was 2,617,000, an increase of 45,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,572,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,595,500, a decrease of 5,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,600,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 425,632 in the week ending July 9, an increase of 98,659 from the previous week. There were 444,531 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending July 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,410,668, a decrease of 4,566 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,720,765.

 

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,935 in the week ending July 2, an increase of 374 from the prior week. There were 2,080 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 37 from the preceding week.

There were 13,926 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 25, an increase of 989 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,839, an increase of 568 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 25 were in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.0), Oregon (2.8), New Jersey (2.7), Michigan (2.6), Rhode Island (2.5), Arkansas (2.4), California (2.3), Connecticut (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), and Wisconsin (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 2 were in Michigan (+8,770), Kentucky (+5,040), New York (+4,743), Wisconsin (+4,294), and Texas (+2,857), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-1,214), Kansas (-707), Maryland (-696), Oregon (-665), and Florida (-550).
