UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 364,000, an increase of 43,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 333,000, an increase of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 332,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Dec. 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 25 was 2,840,000, an increase of 61,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,779,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,770,250, an increase of 13,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,757,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 551,274 in the week ending Jan. 1, an increase of 103,931 from the previous week. There were 552,815 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Dec. 25, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,019,208, an increase of 273,614 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.0 percent and the volume was 3,730,751.

 

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 18.

474 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Dec. 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,435 in the week ending Dec. 25, a decrease of 569 from the prior week. There were 1,303 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 347 from the preceding week.

There were 19,569 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 18, a decrease of 2,657 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,548, a decrease of 2,323 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 18 were in Alaska (5.1 percent), Puerto Rico (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.2), Idaho (3.1), Michigan (3.1), Oregon (3.1), New Jersey (2.9), Washington (2.9), Wisconsin (2.9), Massachusetts (2.8), and New York (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 25 were in Indiana (+9,025), Pennsylvania (+8,631), Wisconsin (+8,610), Kentucky (+7,875), and Michigan (+4,452), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-2,710), North Carolina (-1,730), South Carolina (-1,526), Tennessee (-1,093), and Florida(-1,080).
