UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 349,000, an increase of 40,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 339,000, an increase of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 335,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending July 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 3 was 2,971,000, an increase of 112,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,859,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,934,750, an increase of 19,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,915,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 442,769 in the week ending July 10, an increase of 93,208 from the previous week. There were 552,621 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending July 3, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,736,156, a decrease of 5,641 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,627,409.

 

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 26.

7,256 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 26.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,070 in the week ending July 3, an increase of 593 from the prior week. There were 1,997 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 55 from the preceding week.

There were 15,424 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 26, an increase of 1,746 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,501, a decrease of 184 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 26 were in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (3.8), Oregon (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Arkansas (2.8), California (2.7), Massachusetts (2.7), Michigan (2.7), and Rhode Island (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 3 were in New York (+7,818), Michigan (+3,737), Kentucky (+3,535), Indiana (+2,432), and California (+2,216), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-2,313), Oklahoma (-2,116), Massachusetts (-1,665), Georgia (-1,381), and Delaware (-646).
