UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 378,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 365,000. The 4-week moving average was 364,750, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 362,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Nov. 29, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 29 was 3,346,000, an increase of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,335,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,373,750, a decrease of 32,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,406,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 490,406 in the week ending Dec. 6, an increase of 133,566 from the previous week. There were 547,430 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending Nov. 29, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,429,500, an increase of 488,281 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,618,507.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Nov. 22.

53 states reported that 778,518 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Nov. 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,266 in the week ending Nov. 29, a decrease of 1,019 from the prior week. There were 1,008 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 671 from the preceding week.

There were 19,499 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 22, a decrease of 2,494 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,267, a decrease of 2,116 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 22 were in Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (3.9), Oregon (3.8), Washington (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.2), California (3.0), Idaho (3.0), New Jersey (3.0), Michigan (2.9), Arkansas (2.8), Massachusetts (2.8), and Wisconsin (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 29 were in Wisconsin (+13,541), Minnesota (+2,811), Idaho (+1,882), Iowa (+1,757), and Indiana (+1,407), while the largest decreases were in California (-19,629), Missouri (-5,816), Kentucky (-5,084), Illinois (-4,602), and South Carolina (-3,455).
