UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 351,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 362,000. The 4-week moving average was 358,750, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's revised average of 368,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Nov. 15, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 15 was 3,368,000, a decrease of 105,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,473,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,448,000, a decrease of 42,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,490,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 394,933 in the week ending Nov. 22, an increase of 47,786 from the previous week. There were 436,549 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Nov. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,159,635, an increase of 169,268 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,263,052.

 

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Nov. 8.

53 states reported that 806,109 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Nov. 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,977 in the week ending Nov. 15, a decrease of 287 from the prior week. There were 1,530 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 388 from the preceding week.

There were 18,638 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 8, a decrease of 1,882 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,039, a decrease of 230 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 8 were in Alaska (4.9 percent), Puerto Rico (4.2), Oregon (3.7), Washington (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.3), California (3.2), New Jersey (3.0), Massachusetts (2.8), Michigan (2.8), and Wisconsin (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 15 were in Michigan (+843), Kentucky (+571), Louisiana (+84), and Nevada (+34), while the largest decreases were in California (-9,777), North Carolina (-4,298), Wisconsin (-3,023), Washington (-2,535), and Illinois (-2,493).
