UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 439,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous
week's revised figure of 434,000. The 4-week moving average was 426,750, an
increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 425,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0
percent for the week ending June 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 2.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending June 28 was 3,818,000, an increase of 87,000 from
the preceding week's revised level of 3,731,000. The 4-week moving average was
3,740,750, an increase of 9,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
3,731,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 479,909 in the week ending July 5, an increase
of 86,265 from the previous week. There were 456,716 initial claims in the
comparable week in 2002.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending June 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,363,971, a
decrease of 30,920 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was
2.5 percent and the volume was 3,218,111.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington
during the week ending June 21.
53 states reported that 854,406 individuals filed continued claims under
the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during
the week ending June 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,773 in the week ending June 28, a decrease of 26 from the prior week.
There were 1,197 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 13
from the preceding week.
There were 14,350 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 21, a decrease of 199 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,226, a decrease of 930 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 21 were
in Puerto Rico (4.6 percent), Oregon (4.4), Alaska (4.3), Pennsylvania (3.9),
California (3.6), Washington (3.6), Arkansas (3.2), Connecticut (3.2), Illinois
(3.1), Massachusetts (3.1), and New Jersey (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 28 were
in New Jersey (+6,416), Massachusetts (+5,340), Kentucky (+4,791), North
Carolina (+3,150), and New York (+2,549), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-4,056), California (-2,029), Florida (-1,976), Illinois
(-1,613), and Oregon (-1,101).
