UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 430,000, an increase of 21,000 from the previous
week's revised figure of 409,000. The 4-week moving average was 425,000, a
decrease of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 429,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0
percent for the week ending June 21, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 2.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending June 21 was 3,751,000, an increase of 34,000 from
the preceding week's revised level of 3,717,000. The 4-week moving average was
3,736,250, an increase of 17,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
3,718,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 389,468 in the week ending June 28, an increase
of 12,352 from the previous week. There were 358,658 initial claims in the
comparable week in 2002.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending June 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,413,651, an
increase of 16,223 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was
2.6 percent and the volume was 3,340,273.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington
during the week ending June 14.
53 states reported that 850,999 individuals filed continued claims under
the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during
the week ending June 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,797 in the week ending June 21, an increase of 278 from the prior
week. There were 1,210 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 83 from the preceding week.
There were 14,551 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 14, an increase of 1,304 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,157, an increase of 1,105 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 14 were
in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (4.8), Oregon (4.4), Pennsylvania (3.8),
Washington (3.7), California (3.6), New Jersey (3.2), Arkansas (3.1),
Connecticut (3.1), and Massachusetts (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 21 were
in California (+3,698), Massachusetts (+2,154), New Jersey (+1,916), Washington
(+1,466), and Kentucky (+1,376), while the largest decreases were in North
Carolina (-4,300), Illinois (-3,231), Ohio (-3,032), Michigan (-2,519), and
Minnesota (-1,195).
