UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 421,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 434,000. The 4-week moving average was 432,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 435,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 7, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 7 was 3,721,000, a decrease of 62,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,783,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,726,000, an increase of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,715,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 378,114 in the week ending June 14, a decrease of 42,410 from the previous week. There were 356,096 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending June 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,397,225, a decrease of 45,610 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6 percent and the volume was 3,364,030.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 31.

53 states reported that 848,207 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 31.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,639 in the week ending June 7, an increase of 52 from the prior week. There were 1,247 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 321 from the preceding week.

There were 14,100 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 31, an increase of 2,121 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,171, an increase of 1,109 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 31 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (5.0), Oregon (4.7), Washington (4.0), California (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), Arkansas (3.3), Massachusetts (3.3), Idaho (3.2), and New Jersey (3.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 7 were in California (+10,125), Kansas (+6,898), Pennsylvania (+5,049), Illinois (+4,268), and Florida (+3,889), while the largest decreases were in
Mississippi (-533), Vermont (-410), North Carolina (-384), Virginia (-330), and Wisconsin (-262).
