UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 397,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 383,000. The 4-week moving average was 384,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 387,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Jan. 18, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 18 was 3,289,000, a decrease of 56,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,345,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,349,250, a decrease of 29,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,379,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 430,801 in the week ending Jan. 25, a decrease of 111,538 from the previous week. There were 431,690 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.2 percent during the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,058,785, a decrease of 72,623 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4 percent and the volume was 4,325,313.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Jan. 11.

53 states reported that 713,808 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Jan. 11.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,888 in the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 731 from the prior week. There were 1,641 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 255 from the preceding week.

There were 24,072 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 11, an increase of 1,989 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,271, an increase of 645 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 11 were in Alaska (6.7 percent), Oregon (5.1), Puerto Rico (4.8), Washington (4.8), Idaho (4.7), Pennsylvania (4.7), Michigan (4.5), Wisconsin (4.4), Rhode Island (4.2), and Massachusetts (4.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 18 were in Louisiana (+1,224), the District of Columbia (+216), Florida (+168), the Virgin Islands (+41), and Nebraska (+11), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-19,668), Tennessee (-17,263), Pennsylvania (-15,051), Michigan (-9,960), and Virginia
(-9,834).
