UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 381,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 363,000. The 4-week moving average was 386,500, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 388,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan 11 was 3,408,000, an increase of 87,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,321,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,394,750, a decrease of 14,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,409,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 539,557 in the week ending Jan. 18, a decrease of 184,332 from the previous week. There were 558,297 initial claims in the comparable week in 2002.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Jan. 11, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,208,957, a decrease of 281,688 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.3 percent and the volume was 4,290,623.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Jan. 4.

53 states reported that 511,416 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Jan. 4.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,602 in the week ending Jan. 11, an increase of 726 from the prior week. There were 1,890 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 779 from the preceding week.

There were 22,071 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 4, a decrease of 1,756 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,622, an increase of 144 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 4 were in Alaska (6.6 percent), Oregon (5.9), Pennsylvania (5.6), Idaho (5.4), Puerto Rico (5.4), Michigan (5.3), Washington (5.2), Wisconsin (5.2), Rhode Island (4.9), and Arkansas (4.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan.11 were in California (+21,996), Texas (+12,239), Michigan (+11,417), Georgia (+9,782), and Illinois (+6,993), while the largest decreases were in New York
(-14,845), South Carolina (-7,984), North Carolina (-3,846), Wisconsin (-3,674), and Arkansas (-957).
