UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 433,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 444,000. The 4-week moving average was 400,750, an increase of  12,750 from the previous week's revised average of 388,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Dec. 7, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 7  was 3,497,000, an increase of 229,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,268,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,458,500, a decrease of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,475,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 481,096 in the week ending Dec. 14, a decrease of 66,122 from the previous week. There were 440,822 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending Dec. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,560,125, a decrease of 63,977 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,664,697.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Nov. 30 .

53 states reported that 787,977 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Nov. 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,221 in the week ending Dec. 7, an increase of 789 from the prior week. There were 1,570 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 720 from the preceding week.

There were 23,228 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 30, an increase of 4,606 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,688, an increase of 2,660 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 30 were in Alaska (5.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Oregon (4.7), Washington (4.5), Arkansas (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.9), Idaho (3.8), Wisconsin (3.8), California (3.7), and the Virgin Islands (3.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 7 were in California (+20,379), Pennsylvania (+17,541), Georgia (+14,421), North Carolina (+13,465), and Michigan (+12,241), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-10,443), Texas (-3,292), Kentucky (-936), Idaho (-674), and Vermont (-662).
