UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Nov. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 396,000. The 4-week moving average was 396,750, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 403,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending Nov. 2 was 3,646,000, an increase
of 89,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,557,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,581,000, a decrease of 11,250 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,592,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 413,682 in the week ending Nov. 9, an increase of 16,576 from the previous week. There were 456,362 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Nov. 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,139,394, an increase of 80,579 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 3,181,794. Extended benefits were available in North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending Oct. 26. 53 states reported that 798,258 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Oct. 26. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,341 in the week ending Nov. 2, a decrease of 185 from the prior week. There were 1,383 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 140 from the preceding week. There were 18,436 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 26, a decrease of 1,140 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,698, an increase of 397 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 26 were in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (4.2), Oregon (3.8), Washington (3.6), California (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.3), New Jersey (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), Massachusetts (2.9), and Connecticut (2.8). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 2 were in Missouri (+6,068), Texas (+2,742), Iowa (+2,044), Washington (+1,670), and Virginia (+1,606), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,923), Delaware (-1,143), New Jersey (-1,101), Wisconsin (-857), and New York (-855).
