UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Aug. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 389,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 391,000. The 4-week moving average was 388,250, an increase of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 382,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Aug. 10, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 10 was 3,520,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,523,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,504,250, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,497,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 309,448 in the week ending Aug. 17, a decrease of 23,003 from the previous week. There were 317,046 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 10, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,298,452, a decrease of 12,874 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,928,424. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Aug. 3. 52 states reported that 1,095,393 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Aug. 3. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,251 in the week ending Aug. 10, a decrease of 154 from the prior week. There were 1,381 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 80 from the preceding week. There were 17,399 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 3, a decrease of 689 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,825, an increase of 259 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 3 were in Puerto Rico (7.0 percent), Washington (3.8), Oregon (3.7), Alaska (3.6), New Jersey (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.5), California (3.4), Massachusetts (3.3), the Virgin Islands (3.3), Connecticut (3.2), and Rhode Island (3.2). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 10 were in Iowa (+1,910), California (+1,396), Florida (+1,283), North Carolina (+1,195), and New Jersey (+1,186), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-2,621), Ohio (-1,164), Alabama (-931), Mississippi (-902), and
