UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 387,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was 386,000, an increase of  250 from the previous week's revised average of 385,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending July 20, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 20 was 3,502,000, an increase of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,497,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,542,750, a decrease of 41,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,583,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 334,709 in the week ending July 27, a decrease of  60,567 from the previous week. There were 332,957 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending July 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,428,793, a decrease of  165,997 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,900,831.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending July 13.

51 states reported that 1,014,317 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending July 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,578 in the week ending July 20, a decrease of 511 from the prior week. There were 1,300 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 49 from the preceding week.

There were 17,294 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 13, an increase of 1,581 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,149, an increase of 122 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 13 were in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Michigan (4.4), Alaska (3.9), Oregon (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.9), Washington (3.8), California (3.6), New Jersey (3.6), Rhode Island (3.5), and Massachusetts (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 20 were in Ohio (+3,855), Texas (+1,476), Delaware (+1,171), and Maine (+37), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-16,608), New York (-12,498), North Carolina (-12,353), Missouri (-9,413), and South Carolina (-6,408).
