UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 362,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 383,000. The 4-week moving average was 384,500, a decrease of  7,500 from the previous week's revised average of 392,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending July 13, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 13 was 3,518,000, a decrease of 51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,569,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,585,750, a decrease of 41,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,627,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 390,121 in the week ending July 20, a decrease of  116,322 from the previous week. There were 406,038 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending July 13, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,616,268, an increase of  61,664 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,101,591.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending July 6.

51 states reported that 1,143,066 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending July 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,085 in the week ending July 13, an increase of 63 from the prior week. There were 1,338 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 396 from the preceding week.

There were 15,805 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 6, an increase of 925 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,178, an increase of 1,157 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 6 were in Puerto Rico (6.9 percent), Oregon (4.2), Washington (4.0), Alaska (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.7), California (3.6), New Jersey (3.6), Connecticut (3.5), Massachusetts (3.5), Rhode Island (3.4), and Wisconsin (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 13 were in North Carolina (+19,478), Tennessee (+13,001), South Carolina (+9,560), Missouri (+9,309), and Alabama (+6,884), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-6,496), Texas (-5,636), Arkansas (-4,293), Kentucky (-4,087), and Indiana (-3,645).
