UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 379,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 407,000. The 4-week moving average was 391,000, a decrease of  4,750 from the previous week's revised average of 395,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending July 6, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 6 was 3,591,000, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,590,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,632,500, a decrease of 39,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,671,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 501,380 in the week ending July 13, an increase of  44,953 from the previous week. There were 524,139 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending July 6, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,577,088, an increase of  345,884 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,093,737.  

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending June 29.

51 states reported that 1,058,060 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 29.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,020 in the week ending July 6, an increase of 348 from the prior week. There were 941 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 144 from the preceding week.

There were 14,989 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 29, an increase of 597 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,191, a decrease of 562 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 29 were in Alaska (5.1 percent), Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.5), California (3.3), New Jersey (3.3), South Carolina (3.3), Connecticut (3.1), Massachusetts (3.1), and Rhode Island (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 6 were in Michigan (+26,899), Wisconsin (+12,205), New York (+10,593), Indiana (+7,609), and Illinois (+6,120), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-2,829), California (-1,993), Arizona (-1,677), Connecticut (-1,300), and Puerto Rico (-767).
