UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending July 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 403,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 387,000. The 4-week moving average was 395,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 393,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending June 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 29 was 3,639,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,672,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,685,500, a decrease of 27,000 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,712,500. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 452,522 in the week ending July 6, an increase of 93,750 from the previous week. There were 526,826 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending June 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,274,920, a decrease of 70,463 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,665,672. Extended benefits were available in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending June 22. 51 states reported that 1,181,367 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 22. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,638 in the week ending June 29, an increase of 51 from the prior week. There were 1,083 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 29 from the preceding week. There were 14,535 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 22, a decrease of 223 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,954, an increase of 377 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 22 were in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (4.1), Oregon (3.9), Washington (3.9), California (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.6), New Jersey (3.2), Connecticut (3.1), Massachusetts (3.1), Arkansas (3.0), Illinois (3.0), and Rhode Island (3.0). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 29 were in New York (+2,750), Kentucky (+2,350), Texas (+2,186), Massachusetts (+1,567), and New Jersey (+961), while the largest decreases were in Florida (-1,973), Indiana (-1,420), Wisconsin (-1,224), Maryland (-1,001), and California (-954).
