UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 382,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 393,000. The 4-week moving average was 392,000, a decrease of  250 from the previous week's revised average of 392,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending June 22, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 22 was 3,699,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,687,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,720,250, a decrease of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,743,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 354,126 in the week ending June  29, a decrease of  5,510 from the previous week. There were 375,885 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during the week ending June 22, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,369,493, an increase of  36,041 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,731,320.

Extended benefits were available in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending June 15.

50 states reported that 1,197,494 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending June 15.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,576 in the week ending June 22, an increase of 184 from the prior week. There were 1,107 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 61 from the preceding week.

There were 14,853 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 15, an increase of 984 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,739, an increase of 62 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 15 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (4.7), Washington (4.0), Oregon (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.5), South Carolina (3.4), California (3.3), New Jersey (3.2), Massachusetts (3.1), Arkansas (3.0), Illinois (3.0), Wisconsin (3.0), and Connecticut (3.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 22 were in New Jersey (+4,311), Massachusetts (+3,857), California (+3,155), Connecticut (+2,241), and New York (+2,175), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-3,867), Illinois (-2,590), Tennessee (-2,321), Wisconsin (-1,756), and Alabama (-1,094).
