UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 410,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 422,000. The 4-week moving average was 418,500, a decrease of  3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 421,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending May 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 18 was 3,893,000, an increase of 49,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,844,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,836,250, an increase of 38,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,798,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 343,188 in the week ending  May 25, a decrease of  5,913 from the previous week. There were 346,231 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during the week ending May 18, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,480,603, a decrease of  44,112 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,562,318.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending May 11.

47 states reported that 1,218,783 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending May 11.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,107 in the week ending May 18, a decrease of 417 from the prior week. There were 997 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 35 from the preceding week.

There were 13,559 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 11, a decrease of 143 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,395, an increase of 397 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 11 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (5.1), Washington (4.4), Oregon (4.2), California (3.9), South Carolina (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.7), Wisconsin (3.5), Massachusetts (3.4), and New Jersey (3.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 18 were in Pennsylvania (+1,988), Missouri (+1,669), South Carolina (+1,537), Alabama (+768), and Mississippi (+716), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,507), New York (-1,802), Wisconsin (-1,603), Ohio (-1,065), and Michigan (-901).
