UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 421,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 452,000. The 4-week moving average was 452,500, an increase of  1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 450,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending April 13, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 13 was 3,714,000, a decrease of 93,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,807,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,722,000, an increase of 33,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,688,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 381,016 in the week ending  April 20, a decrease of 45,745 from the previous week. There were 369,745 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent during the week ending April 13, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,832,417, a decrease of 50,650 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,840,579.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending April 6.

40 states reported that 1,224,873 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending April 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,357 in the week ending April 13, an increase of 1 from the prior week. There were 1,068 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 49 from the preceding week.

There were 17,325 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 6, an increase of 1,768 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,745, a decrease of 439 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 6 were in Alaska (5.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Washington (4.8), Oregon (4.7), Massachusetts (4.4), Wisconsin (4.2), Michigan (4.1), Idaho (4.0), Pennsylvania (4.0), California (3.7), and New Jersey (3.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 13 were in California (+9,201), Michigan (+1,775), Arizona (+1,726), South Carolina (+1,306), and Washington (+1,186), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-5,722), Massachusetts (-4,107), Pennsylvania (-3,350), New Jersey (-3,336), and Wisconsin (-3,052).
