UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 445,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 444,000. The 4-week moving average was 448,750, an increase of  13,750 from the previous week's revised average of 435,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent for the week ending April 6, an increase of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 6 was 3,839,000, an increase of 82,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,757,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,698,250, an increase of 73,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,624,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 420,190 in the week ending  April 13, a decrease of 14,299 from the previous week. There were 348,724 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.0 percent during the week ending April 6, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,915,447, a decrease of 168,504 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,677,337.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington during the week ending March 30.

39 states reported that 640,963 individuals filed under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending March 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,356 in the week ending April 6, an increase of 211 from the prior week. There were 1,110 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 137 from the preceding week.

There were 15,629 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 30, an increase of 83 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,307, an increase of 253 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 30 were in Alaska (7.0 percent), Puerto Rico (6.0), Washington (4.9), Oregon (4.8), Massachusetts (4.6), Idaho (4.5), Michigan (4.3), Pennsylvania (4.3), California (4.2), and Wisconsin (4.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 6 were in New Jersey (+8,273), New York (+6,496), Texas (+4,046), North Carolina (+3,925), and Tennessee (+3,519), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,787), Michigan (-3,885), Mississippi (-2,174), Idaho (-930), and Missouri (-623).
