UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending March 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 377,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 380,000. The 4-week moving average was 374,750, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 373,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending March 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending March 2 was 3,479,000, an increase
of 96,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,383,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,438,500, an increase of 5,250 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,433,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 380,662 in the week ending March 9, a decrease of 4,398 from the previous week. There were 378,122 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending March 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,292,755, an increase of 56,917 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,056,573. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Feb. 23. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 978 in the week ending March 2, an increase of 127 from the prior week. There were 1,107 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 190 from the preceding week. There were 17,685 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 23, an increase of 183 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,653, an increase of 562 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 23 were in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.4), Idaho (5.3), Oregon (5.2), Washington (5.2), Massachusetts (4.6), Rhode Island (4.5), Wisconsin (4.5), Pennsylvania (4.4), and Michigan (4.3). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 2 were in New York (+10,178), California (+3,225), Washington (+2,134), Michigan (+1,869), and Missouri (+1,517), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-6,561), Georgia (-3,522), Texas (-2,555), Rhode Island (-1,748), and Pennsylvania (-1,331).
