UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Feb. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 383,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 373,000. The 4-week moving average was 381,750, an increase of 5,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 376,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Feb. 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent. The advance number for seasonally
adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 9
was 3,501,000, an increase of 44,000 from the preceding week's
revised level of 3,457,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,460,500, an
increase of 36,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
3,424,000. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 399,979 in the week ending Feb. 16, a decrease of 38,454 from the previous week. There were 346,504 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.4 percent during the week ending Feb. 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,330,481, a decrease of 14,613 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,936,361. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Feb. 2. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,171 in the week ending Feb. 9, a decrease of 188 from the prior week. There were 1,220 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, unchanged from the preceding week. There were 19,120 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 2, a decrease of 1,047 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,891, a decrease of 30 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 2 were in Alaska (7.1 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Oregon (5.5), Washington (5.5), Idaho (5.3), Pennsylvania (4.8), Massachusetts (4.5), Wisconsin (4.5), California (4.4), and Michigan (4.4). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 9 were in Michigan (+6,387), Illinois (+1,925), Texas (+1,419), New York (+1,127), and Minnesota (+864), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-5,428),Washington (-3,640), California (-1,894), Oregon (-1,641), and Virginia (-1,398).
