UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Feb. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 376,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 391,000. The 4-week moving average was 380,500, a decrease of  5,750 from the previous week's revised average of 386,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 26, unchanged  from the prior week's revised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 26 was 3,427,000, a decrease of 50,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,477,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,446,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,468,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 440,013 in the week ending  Feb.  2, an increase of 7,270 from the previous week. There were 425,402 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Jan. 26,  a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,287,593, a decrease of  37,609 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,950,004.

Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Jan. 19.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,151 in the week ending Jan. 26, a decrease of 587 from the prior week. There were 1,031 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 336 from the preceding week.

There were 19,227 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 19, a decrease of 1,944 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,955, an increase of 151 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 19 were in Alaska (7.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Oregon (5.4), Washington (5.2), Idaho (5.1), Pennsylvania (4.8), Michigan (4.7), Massachusetts (4.5), Wisconsin (4.4), California (4.2), Montana (4.2), and Rhode Island (4.2).

There were no increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 26. The largest decreases were in California (-12,815), North Carolina (-11,548), Georgia (-9,865), Michigan (-8,752), and Missouri (-8,483).
