UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 384,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 398,000. The 4-week moving average was 411,000, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 411,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 5, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 5 was 3,470,000, a decrease of 36,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,506,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,587,750, a decrease of 52,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,640,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 776,035 in the week ending Jan.  12, an increase of  140,203 from the previous week. There were 600,054 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.6 percent during the week ending Jan. 5, an increase of 0.3 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,611,026, an increase of  396,925 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,067,097.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 29.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,767 in the week ending Jan. 5, an increase of 769 from the prior week. There were 986 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 359 from the preceding week.

There were 20,400 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 29, an increase of 2,553 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,342, an increase of 872 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 29 were in Alaska (6.1 percent), Oregon (6.1), Puerto Rico (5.7), Washington (5.4), Idaho (5.3), Wisconsin (5.3), Arkansas (4.9), Pennsylvania (4.5), Massachusetts (4.2), Michigan (4.2), and Vermont (4.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 5 were in New York (+25,566), California (+21,024), North Carolina (+16,462), Tennessee (+14,723), and Alabama (+10,346), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-24,308), Michigan (-19,909), Kentucky (-13,783), Massachusetts (-13,665), and Pennsylvania (-7,270).
