UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 384,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 395,000. The 4-week moving average was 438,000, a decrease of 12,250 from the previous week's revised average of 450,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Dec. 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 8 was 3,698,000, an increase of 55,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,643,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,738,000, a decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,742,250.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 439,305 in the week ending Dec. 15, a decrease of  52,299 from the previous week. There were 403,098 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending Dec. 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,683,004, an increase of  54,882 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,314,931.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,026 in the week ending Dec. 8, an increase of 297 from the prior week. There were 1,371 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 23 from the preceding week.

There were 20,196 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 1, an increase of 2,066 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,594, a decrease of 267 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 1 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (5.2), Oregon (4.7), Washington (4.6), Pennsylvania (4.0), Arkansas (3.7), California (3.7), Idaho (3.7), Hawaii (3.6), and Massachusetts (3.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 8 were in Texas (+6,896), Oklahoma (+1,024), Massachusetts (+808), Florida (+759), and Ohio (+485), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-30,892), Pennsylvania (-11,931), South Carolina (-11,862), Georgia (-9,961), and New York (-8,752).
