UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 394,000, a decrease of  86,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 480,000. The 4-week moving average was 450,000, a decrease of  12,000 from the previous week's revised average of 462,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Dec. 1, unchanged   from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 1 was 3,656,000, an increase of 36,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,620,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,744,500, a decrease of 36,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,780,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 489,184 in the week ending Dec.8, a decrease of  116,526 from the previous week. There were 390,629 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending Dec. 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,641,772, a decrease of  75,713 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,211,195.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,726 in the week ending Dec. 1, an increase of 320 from the prior week. There were 1,344 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 486 from the preceding week.

There were 18,118 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 24, an increase of 211 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,943, an increase of 1,936 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 24 were in Puerto Rico (6.9 percent), Alaska (5.6), Oregon (5.1), Washington (4.6), Arkansas (4.0), Nevada (3.9), Wisconsin (3.9), California (3.8), Idaho (3.8), and South Carolina (3.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 1 were in North Carolina (+36,440), California (+19,280), South Carolina (+17,349), Pennsylvania (+16 581), and Georgia (+15,349), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-16,912), Texas (-4,743), Oregon (-3,230), Massachusetts (-2,490), and Kentucky (-1,336).
