UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Nov. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 427,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 442,000. The 4-week moving average was 454,250, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week's revised average of 474,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 10, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.0 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 10 was 3,734,000,
a decrease of 65,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,799,000.
The 4-week moving average was 3,730,750, an increase of 24,000 from the
preceding week's revised average of 3,706,750. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 414,213 in the week ending Nov. 17, a decrease of 42,012 from the previous week. There were 376,215 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Nov. 10, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,192,940, an increase of 9,305 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,006,964. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 3. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,828 in the week ending Nov. 10, an increase of 334 from the prior week. There were 1,281 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 69 from the preceding week. There were 17,834 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 3, an increase of 1,890 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,714, an increase of 92 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 3 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (4.2), Oregon (4.2), Washington (3.8), Hawaii (3.6), Nevada (3.5), California (3.3), Arkansas (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), and Massachusetts (3.1). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 10 were in North Carolina (+3,197), New York (+2,547), Illinois (+1,991), Texas (+1,967), and Ohio (+1,452), while the largest decreases were in Alabama (-2,517), South Carolina (-1,380), Pennsylvania (-636), Georgia (-554), and Massachusetts (-438).
