UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Nov. 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 450,000, a decrease of 46,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 496,000. The 4-week moving average was 487,250, a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week's revised average of 496,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Oct. 27, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 27 was 3,724,000,
an increase of 34,000 from the preceding week's revised level of
3,690,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,663,000, an increase of 55,000
from the preceding week's revised average of 3,608,000. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 442,062 in the week ending Nov. 3, an increase of 5,377 from the previous week. There were 342,767 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Oct. 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,109,232, an increase of 76,431 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,827,518. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 20. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,453 in the week ending Oct. 27, a decrease of 5 from the prior week. There were 1,239 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 32 from the preceding week. There were 17,720 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 1,764 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,564, a decrease of 151 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 20 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Oregon (3.8), Alaska (3.6), Nevada (3.4), Washington (3.4), Hawaii (3.2), California (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.1), Arkansas (2.9), and Massachusetts (2.9). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 27 were in Michigan (+3,895), North Carolina (+3,257), Georgia (+3,162), Virginias (+1,763), and Oregon (+1,553), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,473), Kansas (-2,105), Nevada (-1,436), Delaware (-1,221), and Colorado (-1,154).
