UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 499,000, a decrease of  10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 509,000. The 4-week moving average was 497,250, a decrease of  9,000 from the previous week's revised average of 506,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 20 was 3,692,000, an increase of 55,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,637,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,608,250, an increase of 79,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,528,750.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 439,143 in the week ending Oct. 27, an increase of  7,894 from the previous week. There were 269,335 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Oct. 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,034,690, an increase of  70,387 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,758,499.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,453 in the week ending Oct. 20, a decrease of 679 from the prior week. There were 1,267 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 7 from the preceding week.

There were 16,023 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 13, a decrease of 200 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,804, an increase of 1,076 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 13 were in Puerto Rico (6.8 percent), Alaska (3.8), Oregon (3.7), Nevada (3.6), Washington (3.3), California (3.1), Hawaii (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), and Massachusetts (2.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 20 were in California (+10,381), Illinois (+3,301), Colorado (+3,075), Kansas (+1,864), and Iowa (+1,665), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-5,141), Kentucky (-2,719), Texas (-2,195), Nevada (-2,110), and North Carolina (-1,915).
