UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Oct. 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 490,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 484,000. The 4-week moving average was 491,250, an increase of 24,250 from the previous week's revised average of 467,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 6, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 6 was 3,649,000, an
increase of 152,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,497,000.
The 4-week moving average was 3,449,000, an increase of 105,750 from the
preceding week's revised average of 3,343,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 420,513 in the week ending Oct. 13, a decrease of 20,420 from the previous week. There were 253,683 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending Oct. 6, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,835,611, an increase of 44,834 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.3 percent and the volume was 1,692,761. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 29. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,886 in the week ending Oct. 6, an increase of 639 from the prior week. There were 1,539 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 247 from the preceding week. There were 14,974 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 29, a decrease of 1,133 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,065, an increase of 506 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 29 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Oregon (3.4), Alaska (3.3), Washington (3.1), California (3.0), Hawaii (2.9), Nevada (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.8), Arkansas (2.7), Massachusetts (2.7), and New Jersey (2.7). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 6 were in California (+5,157), Illinois (+3,523), North Carolina (+3,273), Pennsylvania (+3,171), and Arkansas (+3,147), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,148), Hawaii (-1,047), New York (-487), Michigan (-479), and West Virginia (-412).
