Labor Department Gives Maine an Additional $2.6 Million
in Trade Funds
WASHINGTONThe U.S.
Department of Labor has awarded $2.6 million to Maine to assist workers who are
displaced due to trade. These funds were granted in addition to $3.6 million
already dispersed to Maine, bringing the total trade-related funding for Fiscal
Year 2004 to $6.2 million.
President Bush and I wont be satisfied until every worker
who wants a job, can find one, said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.
Workers in Maine who are displaced due to trade will get the assistance
they need to prepare for and find new jobs. The additional $2.6 million in
trade adjustment assistance will help 300 workers get re-employment services
and up to two years of training.
Maine received $3.6 million in funding earlier this fiscal year under a
new formula baseline allocation established for Trade Adjustment Assistance
(TAA) training funds. This additional grant is the ninth awarded from the TAA
reserve account since the beginning of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, 2003. Other
states receiving grants from the reserve account include Georgia, Colorado,
Hawaii, North Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Pennsylvania and New York.
The new formula allocation, implemented to improve management of
resources, distributes 75 percent of total available TAA training funds at the
beginning of the fiscal year. The remaining 25 percent is reserved for states
that experience large, unexpected layoffs.
