Labor Department and Social Security Administration
Partner To Reduce Unemployment Benefit Overpayments
WashingtonThe U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) signed a
memorandum of understanding today that will allow the Labor Department to
access social security data to combat unemployment benefit fraud and abuse.
The new partnership was signed by Assistant Secretary of Labor for
Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco and Social Security Administration
Associate Commissioner for Income Security Programs Nancy Veillon.
This sharing of data is a major step in achieving a key element of
the Presidents management agendaimproving financial performance by
reducing erroneous benefit payments, said DeRocco. The memorandum
of understanding will help prevent unemployment insurance overpayments and
fulfill our fiscal responsibilities for this key national program.
State workforce agencies that administer federal-state unemployment
compensation laws will now have access to SSA data to verify personal
information about people applying for unemployment benefits. Kinds of data made
available include name, social security number and date of birth.
