News Release ETA News Release: [01/20/2004] U.S. Labor Secretary Announces Grants of Nearly $2.7 Million for Dislocated Idaho WorkersWASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced two National Emergency Grants totaling approximately $2.7 million to assist laid-off Idaho workers. Both grants were awarded to the Idaho Department of Labor. This administration is committed to getting help as quickly as possible to workers who have been laid off, said Chao. These grants will provide training and re-employment assistance services including outreach, assessment, job search assistance, basic skills training, on-the-job training and customized skills training. About 200 workers laid off from Stimson Lumber and Center Partners in Coeur dAlene, Idaho, will benefit. The amount available for assistance will be up to $1,837,435, of which $320,500 will be available immediately. A second grant of up to $861,321 will help about 150 workers dislocated as a result of the closure of the J.R. Simplot meat processing plant in Nampa, Idaho. The initial award will be $205,300, with remaining funds to follow. National Emergency Grants are part of the secretarys discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
