U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $50.2 Million to States for Training Dislocated Workers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced allocations of over $50.2 million to ensure that states are able to fund FY 2004 training programs under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Act.

“The President and I want to do everything we can to get help as quickly as possible to workers who have been displaced because of trade-related reasons,” said Chao. “This $50.2 million in trade adjustment assistance funding provides eligible workers with up to 104 weeks of training.”

The funding comes under the Continuing Resolution, signed by President Bush, for trade related training activities through January 31, 2004.

The TAA program is available to assist individuals who have become unemployed as a result of increased imports from, or shifts in production to, foreign countries.

Additional information on the TAA program can be found at www.doleta.gov/tradeact.
