Labor Secretary Announces $695,000 Grant to Aid Dislocated Workers in Connecticut

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $694,950, with an initial release of $180,861, to aid approximately 57 workers laid off from Dupont Photomasks, Inc., in Danbury, Conn.

“The President and I are committed to getting help as quickly as possible to workers who have been laid off,” Chao said. “This grant will help workers access training and support services so they can find new job opportunities.”

The grant, awarded to the Connecticut Department of Labor, will provide participants with employment transition services to include outreach, comprehensive assessment, job search assistance, occupational training, skills upgrading, adult education and literacy and job readiness training.

Dupont Photomasks, Inc., announced the closure of its facility in Danbury, Conn., on July 8, 2003. Rapid Response teams conducted early intervention services in August 2003, providing affected workers with information on the services available through their local One-Stop Career Center.

Operated by Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, the project will serve laid-off workers from Fairfield, New Haven, Hartford and Litchfield counties.

National Emergency grants are part of the secretary’s discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
