Labor Grants Will Aid Dislocated Massachusetts Workers

Chao Announces Two National Emergency Grants Totaling over $8.1 Million to Supplement Re-employment Programs

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced two National Emergency Grants, totaling over $8.1 million that will aid dislocated Massachusetts workers. National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary’s discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.

“The President and I are committed to helping displaced workers access the job and skills training they need to find new jobs that will enable them to provide for themselves and their families, “ said Chao. “We have worked with Governor Romney and Senator Kennedy to ensure these funds are deployed as quickly as possible to help these Massachusetts workers secure good jobs.”

A $5.2 million grant will target over 1,000 workers dislocated from the aviation industry and other industries such as travel, tourism, hospitality and retail subsequent to the September 11 terrorist attacks and the continuing effects of these events. Another grant in the amount of $2.9 million will serve over 800 Massachusetts workers dislocated from their jobs in manufacturing and technology industries.

The grants project to deliver critical help to unemployed Massachusetts citizens, underscoring one of the main goals of the President’s economic agenda. The Massachusetts Department of Labor and Workforce Development will operate both programs. Provisions are made within each grant for adjustment assistance including but not limited to occupational training, job search assistance, and basic skills training.

“Helping American workers who have lost their jobs remains a top priority for this Administration,” said Chao.
