Region 2 News Release: BOS 2002-203 Oct. 8, 2002 Contact: Ted Fitzgerald Phone: (617) 565-2074 OSHA, IMC FORM ALLIANCE Goal to Promote Safe and Healthful Workplaces among Member Companies in Rochester, NY, Region ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y. area offices and the Rochester-based IMC have established an Alliance to promote safe and healthful working conditions for the 175,000 employees of the 430 IMC member companies in the Rochester, N.Y. region, announced OSHA Administrator John L. Henshaw today. The Alliance will help foster a culture of safety and health excellence within IMC member companies and organizations by providing them with information and guidance that will help them protect employees' health and safety and increasing their access to, and sharing of, safety and health management information and training resources. "Alliances such as this one are the cornerstone in our efforts to enlist the business community's help in making sure workplaces are safe and healthy," said Henshaw. "We must all work together for the common good - that of reducing injuries and illnesses in the workplace across the board." "This model provides a new collaborative approach to managing safety and health that will assist IMC members in employee retention and increased productivity," said Sandy Parker, president of The IMC. The IMC, formerly the Industrial Management Council, is an employers association that provides human resource-related services and comprehensive assistance on safety and health management and compliance for its member companies in the Rochester area. OSHA's Buffalo and Syracuse area offices will work with the IMC to jointly develop and disseminate information on safety excellence and management; reach out to companies and organizations in the IMC's service area to mentor and counsel them on the merits and means to achieve safety excellence; and promote IMC members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs. A joint OSHA/IMC implementation team will meet on a regular schedule to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the Alliance. Team members will include representatives of OSHA's Buffalo and Syracuse Area Offices. OSHA will afford the opportunity for representatives of the Occupational Safety and Health State Plan Association and the association of state Consultation Projects to participate as well. The Alliance will remain in effect for one year, with annual automatic renewals. It may be modified with the concurrence of all parties and any signatories may withdraw for any reason with 30 days notice. The alliance was signed Oct. 2, 2002 at the Genesee Valley Safety Conference in Rochester. Signatories are John Henshaw, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health; Sandy Parker, President of the IMC; Diane Brayden, OSHA Area Director in Syracuse; and Art Dube, OSHA Acting Area Director in Buffalo. ###### The information in this release will be made available to sensory impaired individuals upon request.
