| Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC January 8, 2007 Under Secretary Dobriansky Co-Hosting the Conference of Women Leaders in Science, Technology, and EngineeringUnder Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky is co-hosting the "Conference of Women Leaders in Science, Technology and Engineering," in Kuwait, January 8-10. The conference is being held under the patronage of Kuwaiti Prime Minister H.H. Shaykh Naser Mohammad Al-Sabah, and co-hosted by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the U.S. co-sponsor. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment, and Science Claudia A. McMurray will also deliver remarks at the conference. The conference offers women scientists from 20 Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and North Africa an opportunity to create stronger networks with U.S. counterparts and each other, and will build their capacity to serve as leaders, innovators, and mentors. The conference brings together teams of women scientists, researchers and students to participate in discussions and roundtables on the role of women in science, science education, and bringing science to market. Country teams include senior and mid-career women scientists, researchers, students, and entrepreneurs working in science and technology fields. Conference workshops feature sessions on grant proposal writing, building leadership and business skills, networking, and mentoring. Distinguished leaders in academia, business, and government are participating as speakers and moderators.
