Secretary of State Colin L. Powell Meeting with the Quartet and Foreign Ministers of Jordan and Egypt in New York

On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will host a meeting of the "Quartet," i.e., the European Union, the United Nations, the Russian Federation, and the United States, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.  Representing the other members of the Quartet will be U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, and European Union High Representative Javier Solana.

These discussions will focus on advancing President Bush's vision for two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side within secure and recognized borders, and addressing continuing efforts by the U.S., the Quartet, and our international partners to assist the Palestinian people in their effort to implement reform of Palestinian institutions and economy in preparation for statehood.

Secretary Powell will also meet bilaterally with Egyptian Foreign Minister Maher and Jordanian Foreign Minister Muasher.  The Quartet will meet late July 16th with the Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Jordan, hosted by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, for continuing consultations on these same issues.

Further scheduling details will be released closer to the meeting date.
