The Department of State will host a day-long conference on sustainable development that will feature remarks by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell on Friday, July 12, 2002. Entitled “Making Sustainable Development Work: Governance, Finance and Public-Private Cooperation,” the conference is part of a continuing sustainable development dialogue involving the U.S. government that will bring together representatives from government, business, civil society and international financial institutions. The conference will focus on the challenges of fostering good domestic governance and the key role of partnerships for implementing sustainable development. This event is especially timely in light of the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa (August 26 – September 4, 2002).
The conference will include speakers from four stakeholder groups involved in implementing sustainable development (government, civil society, the private sector and international financial institutions/international organizations), as well as roundtable discussions focused on examples of partnerships organized around three themes: energy, water, and creating an enabling environment. Mr. Hernando De Soto, President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, will deliver the luncheon address. U.S .Senator Chuck Hagel will deliver remarks. Please see the attached agenda for a full list of speakers and further details.
The conference will take place at the Meridian International Center, 1630 Crescent Place NW, Washington, D.C. The morning portion, including remarks by the Secretary and the luncheon address, will be open to an invited press pool. Media Representatives are invited to view the morning portions of the conference via live satellite feeds to the Department of State press briefing room and the Foreign Press Center (529 14th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20045).
