Future of Iraq, Defense Policy and Institutions Working Group Meeting

The first session of the Future of Iraq project working group on Defense Policy and Institutions will convene on December 10-11, 2002 in Washington, DC.

At this session, the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs will be hosting approximately 10 “Free Iraqis” for discussions of major issues and challenges to be faced in the defense policy of a democratic, pluralistic Iraq that is at peace with its neighbors, complies with Security Council resolutions, and maintains Iraq's territorial integrity. The Iraqi participants have indicated a desire to discuss plans and programs to ensure Iraq’s military support of a civilian, democratic government in a unified Iraq.

For further information regarding the Future of Iraq project, please contact Gregg Sullivan, Deputy Director for Press Affairs, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, at 202-647-5150.

All Future of Iraq working groups are closed to the press. However, those wishing to interview some of the Iraqi participants at the conclusion of the session should contact David Staples, Public Affairs Officer, Future of Iraq, at 202-374-1216, for information how to contact the Iraqis directly.
