Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC July 14, 2006
Morocco hosts International Conference on MigrationWe congratulate Morocco on hosting a successful international conference on migration that brought together some two dozen African countries, 30 European countries, and international observers from the European Commission, the African Union, and the United Nations. The United States attended the conference as an Observer through a representative from the U.S. Embassy in Rabat.
The issue of migration is a key policy issue confronting Africa and Europe, and the United States applauds efforts to address it. Illegal migration and trafficking in persons are global concerns that the United States highlights annually in its Trafficking in Persons Report to Congress. We note with disappointment that Algeria declined to participate in the conference in Morocco.
